Two machines, two contracts
Search campaigns bid on queries people type. You choose match types, negatives, and a landing URL that answers that query. Google’s Search campaign documentation is still the right mental model for high-intent B2B: the query is the brief.
Performance Max mixes Search, Display, YouTube, Discover, Gmail, and Maps from asset groups and conversion goals. Google’s PMax overview is honest that you give the system assets and a goal. You get less query-level control. That is a feature for some retailers. It is a fog machine for a six-figure B2B service if you cannot name the conversion.
B2B failure modes
PMax optimizing for a loosely fired ‘lead’ event will find cheap form spam. Search without negatives will buy competitor names and ‘jobs’ queries. Neither is a strategy. Usability 101 still applies after the click: if the first screen cannot say who it is for, the campaign is paying for confusion.
When Search is the smaller honest experiment
You have ten exact or phrase queries that already appear in Search Console. You have one page that answers each cluster. You can sit with a human and mark good vs junk search terms weekly. That is a bounded test. It is not a forecast.
When PMax is even a conversation
You have a clean conversion (paid, or a tightly qualified request), creative in the required ratios, product or location feeds if Google asks, and brand-safety controls you have actually set. If any of those are missing, PMax is not ‘AI growth’. It is unattended spend.
A sequence before the first pound or dollar
Write this down. If you cannot, do not buy traffic yet.
- The query or audience in one line
- The page they land on, and the one next step
- The conversion event that a salesperson would recognize as real
- The negatives or brand exclusions you will review weekly
- The kill date if the event quality is junk

Frequently asked questions
Is Performance Max required in 2026?
No. It is one campaign type. Search still exists. Choose based on control, not on a conference slide.
Can we run both?
Yes, if you understand cannibalization and you have separate goals. Running both without query reports is how you double-pay for the same brand term.
Does PMax replace SEO?
No. Paid and organic are different inventories. Google’s SEO starter guide is still the organic job.
What conversion should B2B send?
A request a human would call qualified — not a newsletter tick, not a 10-second bounce. Garbage in, garbage optimized.
